What does biodegradable mean?

Materials are biodegradable if they are broken down into their elementary components such as carbon, oxygen, hydrogen and other minerals within a short time under the action of sunlight, water and microbial activity.

Products are considered "slightly biodegradable" if they biodegrade 60 to 100% within 28 days when exposed to sunlight, water and microbial activity. A product is considered "immanently biodegradable" if it biodegrades from 20% to 60% within 28 days under the influence of sunlight, water and microbial activity.
